CERTIPUR-US®: CertiPUR-US® certified foams have been independently analyzed and certified for durability, content, and emissions. CertiPUR-US® foams are low VOC and do not contain heavy metals, formaldehyde, regulated phthalates or certain flame retardants that may cause cancer or reproductive harm.
OEKO-TEX®: Oeko-Tex® certificates confirm the human-ecological safety of textile products from all stages of production. The Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex aims at making it obvious to consumers that the labeled textile products have undergone laboratory testing for a wide range of harmful substances.
GLOBAL ORGANIC TEXTILE STANDARD (GOTS): The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is regarded as the world's foremost processing standard for textiles made from organic fibres. It defines stringent ecological criteria along the entire supply chain and requires compliance with social criteria as well. Backed up by independent certification, the GOTS standard provides credible assurance to the end consumer.
INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED COILS: Individually wrapped coils are the ultimate coil support mechanism for a mattress. Individually wrapped coils are able to move independently allowing for greater articulation to your body’s natural curves resulting in a more ergonomic support and greater pressure relief. A marked reduction in motion transfer is another great feature of individually wrapped coils.
MICRO-COILS: Micro-coils are a type of individually wrapped coil that is very short and made of lighter, softer wire than a typical mattress support coil. Micro-coils can be used as a comfort layer as an alternative to foams and do a wonderful job of articulating to the body providing excellent balance between support and pressure relief.
FOAM ENCASED EDGE: A foam encased edge means that the coil support of the mattress has been surrounded by a foam border. This foam border provides a more consistent edge and reduces roll-off. Another great benefit of foam encased edges is that they can increase the sleep surface of a mattress by up to 20% by creating a more consistent feel across the surface of the mattress.
ZONED SUPPORT/COMFORT: Zoned support or comfort refers to the fact that the mattress has been designed with different comfort zones to enhance support and reduce pressure points. Typically, the center third of the mattress will be slightly firmer to prevent sagging while the shoulder area may be softer to allow for more conformity in that sensitive area. This effect can be achieved either by using a zoned coil or by adding extra comfort layers in strategic areas of the mattress.
HIGH DENSITY FOAM: A foams density is a measure of how much it weighs per cubic foot. A higher density foam is better quality and will have greater longevity. A high density foam is typically 1.5lbs or better. However, do not confuse density with comfort. High density foam can come in a wide range of comforts from very soft to very firm.
PLANT BASED FOAM: Plant based foams usually contain up to 20% soy. Because of this, plant based foams have been touted as a more eco-friendly option.
MEMORY FOAM: Sometimes referred to as viscoelastic foam, memory foam was originally developed for NASA but has gained in popularity as a mattress material over the last 25 years due to its unique feel and characteristics. Memory foam has a high density and slow reaction time giving it that ‘memory’ feel. Improvements in the manufacture of memory foam have resulted in a cooler sleep experience compared to decades past. Memory foam is excellent at relieving pressure points and reducing motion transfer.
GEL MEMORY FOAM: Gel memory foam is created by fusing gel particles to visco foam reducing trapped body heat and improving the recovery time of the mattress. Gel-infused memory foam contains gel "beads" which liquify within the capsule when exposed to heat creating a cooling effect by absorbing heat away from the body.
SERENE FOAM®: Serene foam is excellent at reducing motion transfer/disturbance and is scientifically proven to give you more support, greater pressure relief, and sleeps cooler when compared to conventional and memory foams.
ALOE VERA MEMORY FOAM: Adding aloe vera extract to memory foam is said to aid in keeping the mattress fresh and promoting calmness.
MALLOW FOAM: Mallow plant extract is known for its soothing and healing qualities. Mallow has been used to reduce inflammation and soften skin. Foam infused with mallow is promoted as helping to calm the mind and foster an overall sense of wellbeing.
LATEX: Latex is naturally derived from the sap of rubber trees and has been used in mattresses for about 100 years providing maximum ergonomic support, pressure relief, and breathability. Latex is the most durable and resilient cushioning material available. Latex is also naturally antimicrobial, mold, mildew and dust mite resistant making it one of the cleanest and healthiest options for mattresses.
DUNLOP LATEX VS. TALALAY LATEX: Dunlop and Talalay are simply two different methods of molding latex cores. Natural latex sap is tapped from rubber trees and processed with other ingredients into a milky liquid which is then poured into a mold in order to shape, cure and transform into an upholstery grade padding material. Without getting too technical, the Talalay method is more precise and results in a finished product that is more consistent. However, each type of latex can come in a wide range of comforts from super soft to very firm. And technical details aside, the average person can’t tell the difference especially if they’re the same comfort and built into a mattress.
WOOL: Wool is a highly resilient and durable fiber making it an excellent choice for use in mattress applications. Wool is also known for its amazing ability to help regulate and stabilize body temperature and wick away moisture while at the same time being naturally flame resistant resulting in a safer, better, more comfortable night’s sleep.
MODAL: Modal fabric is produced from beech tree fibers and provides a soft, luxurious feel with a smooth lustrous finish less prone to wrinkles, shrinkage, and pilling. Because of its absorbent, breathable properties, Modal is cool to the touch but is more durable, absorbent, and breathable when compared to cotton.
VISCOSE: Viscose fabric is derived from the cellulose of trees. Viscose is very soft and smooth making it a great fabric to finish a mattress.
OUTLAST® VISCOSE: Outlast® is a temperature regulating technology that uses phase change Thermocules™ to absorb, store and release excess heat. It can be incorporated into fabrics helping them to regulate and stabilize body temperature. This space age technology can be a great benefit to those who sleep hot.
LYOCELL/TENCEL: Lyocell or Tencel fabric is very eco-friendly being naturally derived from wood pulp and 100% biodegradable. It is highly breathable and excellent at wicking away moisture making it anti-bacterial. Lyocell is a fantastic option to finish a mattress as it is incredibly soft and smooth as well.
SILVER: Silver has long been known for its antimicrobial properties. With the advent of nanotechnology, textiles may now be treated with silver helping them to remain fresh by inhibiting the growth of mold and mildew and reducing odor.
ORGANIC COTTON: Organic cotton fabric is made from organically grown cotton making it a highly eco-friendly option. Organic cotton fabrics used in mattresses makes sense as it is very breathable and durable. Today’s stretch knits are soft, smooth and pliable which works well for top quilt panels giving the mattress a supple finish.
